Unique trees: Sequoias de la Losa

The giant Sequoias de la Losa, measuring 25-30 metres tall, are simply spectacular. They are relatively young and small if we compare them with others of their kind in California, which are more than 100 metres tall and 3,000 years old.

They are popularly referred to in Spanish as ‘Mariantonias’ or ‘Mariantoñas’. Some believe that these names are derived from the name of the wife of the Marquess de Corvera, owner of the La Losa estate, and also the individual who brought them from Canada. On the other hand, many contend that these terms are mutations of the popular word ‘Wellingtonia’ (the variety of the species originally brought from Canada).

The first Sequoias can be seen on the right side of the highway and are completely accessible to the public. The rest are to the left but are inside the private estate of La Losa.
