Nacimiento del Río Castril (Castril River source)

Quite possibly the most spectacular part of the Castril River is its source, which emerges with surprising force … as if by magic. It’s also very changeable, making it possible to always observe at least one point with significant water pressure. There are numerous cracks in the rock as well from we can see water flow depending on how rainy the season.

This source emerges from within the Sierra de Castril from the Pinar Negro aquifer, located to the north. This aquifer is supplied by an extensive limestone plain, upon which a field of dolines has formed. These depressions in the landscape, which are in reality drainage points on the surface, allow water into the aquifer; the same water later comes out again via the springs in the area.

This cold water source is quite accessible as it can be reached via the comfortable trail that runs from the Cortijo del Nacimiento, beside the hydroelectric plant.
