Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor

The Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, declared one of the seven Wonders of the Province of Granada, is the most emblematic building in Huéscar.

Declared Heritage of Cultural Interest in 1973, this Gothic-Renaissance temple from the 16th century brings together a diverse range of artistic styles carried out over the course of centuries. It was designed as an authentic cathedral, which explains its large dimensions. It possesses some notable architectural features, such as its hidden Gothic vaulted ceiling, it Gothic façade and the plateresque ceiling of the Old Sacristy, the octagonal tower with its spiral staircase, the portico with its metalwork, and the Baroque choir. Unfortunately, parts of the building were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War; some of these were the central altarpiece by Diez de Ribero and the Altar of the Dolorosa by Salcillo.

This imposing temple stands tall, rising above the horizon of thetown in the Granada High Plains. The building is widely recognized for its architectural and cultural value as a spectacular monument.
