The Peña de Castril Natural Monument is a rocky outcrop located in the town of Castril. It is a place of exceptional beauty and great natural and cultural value. The town of Castril and the rocky crag are both situated on the left bank of the river that runs through a narrow gorge with almost vertical walls. The outcrop is a stunning viewpoint offering spectacular views of the nearby mountains and much of the Guadix-Baza basin. It will soon be accessible from the municipal tourist office, next to the church, once work to condition the area for tourists has been completed. The La Cerrada trail begins at the foot of the north face of the Peña and runs through the canyon in two stretches. The first, above the river, is a man-made path made of wood and iron. The second crosses the river via a short handing bridge that connects to a tunnel parallel to the riverbank. After emerging from the tunnel, you will come to another bridge and then a road that leads to the village on the eastern side of the Monument. The starting point of the trail can be reached from the church or the Parque de la Abroleda Perdida. This rocky crag was declared a Natural Monument of ecological and cultural interest and has belonged to the RENPA network since 2001.
