Fuencaliente, a natural spring in Huéscar

Fuencaliente is a natural spring and measures 6,000 m2. It is also the centre of an enormous sports-recreation complex that has parking, sports facilities, spacious terraces, a restaurant, beautiful poplar groves and grass areas. Located 2 km from Huéscar, heading towards Puebla de Don Fadrique.

The complex itself is built around a natural spring that has now been transformed into a pool. These waters circulate through deep cracks and faults that are common to the area, which gives this water its natural warmth (19ºC). The waters have moderate mineral levels and sulphated bicarbonated calcium-magnesium. Its volume of flow can reach 500 litres per second.

Huéscar’s Fuencaliente Spring was quite famous in the 16th century as the most important washhouses were established in its proximities. These washing places were run by Genovese merchants who needed wool to be washed prior to sale. This wool industry brought fame and glory to a city that had traditionally only been a town of shepherds, but for which the Segureña sheep has always been a vital part of its economy.
